Laxcats Fall to ASU 17-7 for in-state Bragging Rights
Glendale, AZ, April 20, 2013
The #21 ranked University of Arizona Laxcats were outscored 11-3 in the second half to fall to #6 ranked Arizona State on Saturday night in Glendale. At stake was the number 2 seed for the SLC playoffs.
The Laxcats were led in scoring by Junior Willie Stanaback (4 G) and Freshman Ben Brehne (2G 3A). Junior Goalie Tommy Strock had 19 saves. ASU was paced by its attack unit of Justin Straker (5 G), Payson Clark (5 G 1 A) and Dan Davis (2 G 1A).
“I thought we played competitively for a half. Unfortunately a lacrosse game is 60 minutes and we weren’t able to maintain our energy and focus for the last 30,” said head coach Mickey-Miles Felton. “We felt like we had a solid game plan going in but ASU was better between the lines and that’s where the difference was in the game.”
Arizona trailed 3-0 early, then settled in and tied it at 3 before ASU took a 4-3 lead only to see the Laxcats tie it at 4 late in the second quarter. Going into halftime ASU held a slight 6-4 advantage.
The Laxcats now hold the #3 seed from the south and will travel to Santa Barbara to face the #2 seed from the north University of California-Santa Barbra Gauchos who are ranked #6 in the country.
